1-MCP is a very effective inhibitor of ethylene production and ethylene action. As a plant hormone that promotes maturation and senescence, ethylene can be produced by some plants itself, and can exist in a certain amount in the storage environment or even in the air. Only when ethylene is combined with the relevant receptors in the cell can a series of physiology related to maturation be activated. Biochemical reactions accelerate aging and death. l-MCP can also bind well to ethylene receptors, but this combination will not cause mature biochemical reactions. Therefore, before plant endogenous ethylene is produced or exogenous ethylene is applied, it will preemptively apply 1-MCP It binds to ethylene receptors, thereby preventing the binding of ethylene to its receptors, which prolongs the ripening and aging process of fruits and vegetables, and prolongs the fresh-keeping period.

On July 17, 2002, the Environmental Agency of the US government allowed it to be used in Apple's commercial storage and transportation, and no residue was detected after the application. The United States Government Environment Agency has exempted the 1-MCP application restrictions. More than 27 countries and regions including the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, China, South Africa, Israel, Mexico, Switzerland, and Turkey have approved the use.

The amount of 1-methylcyclopropene used is very small, it is calculated in micrograms, and the method is fumigation. In particular, the respiration type fruits and vegetables can be fumigated 1-14 days after picking, which can prolong the preservation period by at least twice. Take apples and pears as examples. The preservation period can be changed from the original normal storage months. Extend to 8-9 months. A large number of experiments and production applications have shown that environmentally friendly fresh 1-MCP treated fruits can replace the effect of modified atmosphere. For most apple varieties, the fresh-keeping effect of 1-MCP is generally better than that of modified atmosphere storage. The environmentally friendly freshness is not only effective, but also economical and easy to operate. It is currently the most advanced preservative for extending the storage period and shelf life.
