Foliar spraying of Alginate oligosaccharides restores growth of wheat under chlorpyrifos stress

Chlorpyrifos, as an organophosphorus insecticide and acaricide, is suitable for the control of various chewing and sucking mouthparts pests such as wheat. However, excessive use will lead to changes in crop soluble proteins, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, etc., resulting in pesticide stress, thereby affecting crop growth.

In 2015, Zhang Shoudong, Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. published an article "Effects of Alginate Oligosaccharides on Physiological and Biochemical Indexes of Wheat Seedlings Under Chlorpyrifos Stress". In this experiment, spraying 0.4% concentration of Alginate oligosaccharides significantly alleviated the decrease of chlorophyll content and wheat biomass in wheat seedlings under chlorpyrifos stress, inhibited the increase of proline, soluble protein and soluble sugar content, and enhanced wheat Resistance to chlorpyrifos stress.

Test Results:

(Note: CK: distilled water treatment, T0-T4: 0/0.05%/0.1%/0.2%/0.4% Alginate oligosaccharide treatment under chlorpyrifos stress)

As shown in the above results, chlorophyll, as an important indicator reflecting changes in leaf physiological activity, decreased significantly under chlorpyrifos stress (T0), and when the concentration of Alginate oligosaccharides was 0.4% (T4), the chlorophyll content recovered and exceeded the normal level, significantly Alleviate the damage of chlorpyrifos to the photosynthetic function of wheat.

Proline, soluble sugar, and soluble protein, as osmotic protection substances in plants, will increase rapidly under adversity conditions, which is the self-protection performance of plants under adversity. In this experiment, under the stress of chlorpyrifos (T0), Alginate  oligosaccharides (T4) at a concentration of 0.4% were used, and the contents of the above three substances all returned to normal levels. It can be seen that Alginate oligosaccharides can alleviate the physiological damage of chlorpyrifos to wheat.

In summary, Alginate oligosaccharides can regulate the physiological activity of wheat by enhancing the resistance of plants, resist the damage of chlorpyrifos to wheat, and restore the normal growth of plants. And with the increase of the concentration of Alginate oligosaccharides, the resistance to wheat increased more significantly, and the overall performance was that the concentration of 0.4% Alginate oligosaccharides had the most significant mitigation effect.
